Seed Starting Class: Red Roselle

Join as for our new monthly seed starting group led by Elise Pickett of The Urban Harvest!

Each month, we will learn how to grow different organic heirloom varieties of vegetables and edible plants selected for our climate. You will go home with 3 starter kits to grow your own plants from seed.

In June, we will be starting Red Roselle, aka “Florida Cranberry.” Roselle is in the hibiscus family, so not only will you will get to harvest the edible young leaves and calyx, you’ll also be able to enjoy its beautiful white blooms. It grows great in our sandy soil and takes the heat of summer in stride.

Florida cranberry was once so common in our area it was planted as a hedge in many St. Pete homes. It can become a large shrub or be kept in containers and pruned to your desired size. Don't worry, your neighbors wont even know its an edible plant #frontyardgarden!

Bonus: Thai Red Roselle makes a great tea. If you haven't tried hibiscus tea aka red zinger before you'll get your chance at the event. We will be serving light snacks and hibiscus tea mimosas.

Indigo + Shibori Basics Workshop

The whole indigo dyeing process is enchanting and you’re going to love it! We’ll start from a blank slate (all-natural cotton napkins in this case) and create patterns with a modern twist on the ancient Japanese art of shibori resist dyeing. We’ll cover the basics of a few different shibori techniques and talk through the makings of an indigo dye vat.

All levels of experience are welcome—hand dyeing is a fun and curious process, so all you need is a willingness to experiment. All supplies for the workshop will be provided. Be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dye on. Oh and we'll have snacks and refreshments too!

You’ll dye your own pieces and leave with:

  • 4 cotton napkins

  • small sample of textile detergent and dye fixative to wash your items at home (just needed for the first wash; after that they will be safe to wash with your other colored items)

Hosted by Wild Roots with drinks & snacks provided by The Urban Canning Co.

Led by: Lou Garner of Garner Blue
Lou has been dyeing with indigo for the past five years-- always experimenting with new resist techniques to get interesting patterns on cotton, silk and wood. Meaning--her hands pretty much always have a slight hue of blue.
